US vs. UK

The Contender is back and it's US vs. UK. Last week the US boxer, Walter Wright got beaten in a split decision by some awkward UK cat named Small. That guy was the most unorthodox boxer I've seen, but he got the job done and earned the UK 1 point. There are 6 fights scheduled, each win gets the nation of the victor 1 point, all draws earn each nation 1/2 of a point. An overall tie is settled by the number of knockouts. At stake, the Sugar Ray Leonard Cup.

Well, last night was week two and the US had to have a win. Freddy Curiel took on some chap named Minter. He was stronger, bigger and his dad was a former Welterweight Champ of the World. So, Curiel had his work cut out for him and got pummeled for 6 rounds. Round 7 he got a slight edge and then came Round 8, two rounds longer than Minter had ever gone. 2 minutes are gone and then one of the chaps gets knocked the heck out. See for yourself who it was:

So, now the US is even with the tie breaker in their favor. Good Job Freddy!

If you like boxing, you have to watch the Contender on ESPN on Wednesday Nights. You are missing some awesome stuff.
